Dr. Stephen Katz, Dr. Hector Rosquete and Nurse Practitioner Karmen Blackstone have returned from Haiti where they provided aid to those injured in the recent devastation. The group worked long difficult days helping people in any way possible, from performing surgical procedures to cleaning wounds. Dr. Robert Livingston is now performing a new muscle-sparing anterolateral total hip replacement "Minimally Invasive" approach. This procedure, because it is muscle-sparing, is less invasive than other approaches, allowing the patient to have less pain and faster rehabilitation after surgery. In addition, this approach usually results in a more stable hip; therefore, the dislocation precautions that are used with other approaches are not as strict. Also, because of the muscle-sparing approach, the patient may leave the hospital sooner than with previous approaches. We look forward to providing this service to our total hip replacement patients in the Mid-Coast area.
