Once designed crew-stations for Brunswick’s P-3 Orion patrol planes
Dr. Bruce F. Gomberg, MD MA has joined Brunswick-based Coastal Orthopedics Sports Medicine as an orthopedic surgeon.
Dr. Gomberg specializes in total and partial knee replacements, hip replacements, knee arthroscopy, and fracture surgery.
He is an adjunct assistant professor at Dartmouth College School of Medicine. Dr. Gomberg is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, a member of the New England Orthopaedic Society and Maine State Orthopaedic Society.
Dr. Gomberg is also the Director of the prestigious Maine Orthopaedic Review, which has provided continuing orthopaedic education for over 50 years. Bringing a high degree of technical ability to his medical practice, Dr. Gomberg spent several years in research and design in the aerospace industry, most notably at Lockheed’s “Skunkworks” experimental aircraft facility.
“I designed several cockpits for airplanes and helicopters,” says Dr. Gomberg. “Believe it or not, my first job in that industry was designing the rear crew station for the Lockheed P-3 Orion submarine patrol plane, which was stationed right here in Brunswick.” He continues, “To me, at that point, Brunswick was this ‘far off land’ and it is so amazing to think that I’m now practicing in this beautiful area.”
Why the big change in careers? “I knew that I wanted to work directly with people and make a real difference in their lives,” he says. “Once I got to medical school, I realized that orthopedics was the best place to establish a career because you actually fix people.” Dr. Gomberg continues, “Patients come to us with problems that are very concrete and the solutions that we have are proven to be successful. It’s an amazing privilege to be able to have patients that I fix.”
Dr. Gomberg earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware and a master’s degree from New Mexico State University. He earned an MD from the University of Pittsburgh and an internship and orthopedic surgery residency at West Virginia University Hospitals.
